Champions Trophy finals, World T20 in India
Between the decreasing popularity of one-day cricket and the increasing influence of T20, the ICC has decided to end its second-oldest tournament championship trophy. This tournament, played in England in 2017, will be played in new format in 2021.
Between the decreasing popularity of one-day cricket and the increasing influence of T20, the ICC has decided to end its second-oldest tournament championship trophy. This tournament, played in England in 2017, will be played in new format in 2021. This fifty-over tournament was to be played in India in 2021 but now the ICC has decided to change it to World T20.
The ICC introduced it in 1998. Starting with the name of the ICC Knock Out, this tournament went ahead in the name of ICC Champions Trophy in 2002 and it was held 8 times.
Following the conclusion of the five-day ICC Board meeting, ICC Chief Executive Dave Richardson said that this global organization of cricket agreed unanimously that in 2021, there will now be a T20 tournament between 16 teams in India.
Richardson's announcement meant that BCCI representative Amitabh Chaudhary also supported the move. The BCCI initially opposed it.
This means that the ICC World T20 tournament will be organized in two consecutive years. Australia will host the World T20 in 2020.
Richardson said at the press conference, "The Champions Trophy in India in 2021 has been changed to now World T20. It fits into our plan to pursue the game. ''
Meanwhile, the World Cup will be held in 2019 and 2023 and thus the Champions Trophy has been removed. This tournament was considered by many critics as irrelevant while every trick year is organized in the World Cup.
Richardson said, "BCCI representative took part in the board meeting and it was decided unanimously. So I do not think this is a problem. ''
