Harmanpreet Kaur's Supernovas edge Smriti Mandhana-led Trailblazers in exhibition women's IPL match

Harmanpreet Kaur's Supernovas edge Smriti Mandhana-led Trailblazers in exhibition women's IPL match

As the women's all-star exhibition match played their first ever IPL game, Harmanpreet Kaur's Supernovas defeated Smriti Mandhana's Trailblazer in a thriller, winning by three wickets at Wankhede

The much-hyped women's exhibition T20 match had an exciting finish as Harmanpreet Kaur's Supernovas chased down a target of 130 in a last-ball finish to emerge victorious over the Smriti Mandhana led Trailblazers at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
Needing 10 runs in last two overs, Ellyse Perry (13 not out) struck a boundary off Ekta Bisht but Mona Meshram (4) was run out by Smriti Mandhana off the last bowl of the penultimate over.

Needing four off the last over, New Zealand international Suzie Bates conceded just a single in the first three deliveries bringing the equation down to run-a-ball.
A composed Pooja Vastrakar (2 not out) lofted to mid-wicket and completed a single to ensure a win for her side.
While a women's IPL is a novel idea, the response at ground zero was a testimony that BCCI still has some way to go before the idea takes a final shape.
The lukewarm response was largely due to timing of the match as Mumbaikars decided to conserve their energies for the 7pm cracker.
Also, the BCCI diluted the concept, allowing all players from either side to take part in the match.
India's ODI captain Mithali Raj decided against fielding, something that didn't go unnoticed considering the likes of Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Sophie Devine showed utmost professionalism in adverse weather conditions.
The catch that Perry took to dismiss Jemimah Rodrigues during the Trailblazers innings was out of top drawer. Ditto for Harmanpreet Kaur and Veda Krishnamurthy's top-notch fielding efforts.
However, a women's IPL can only be a reality if the timings are suitable for spectators and may be taken to Tier-2 cities where response would be much more than metros which have their own IPL teams.
Chasing 130, veteran Mithali (22) and Dani Wyatt conjured a 47-run-stand for the opening wicket. Mithali stuck a six, the first of the match and followed it with a boundary in the fifth over. But spinner Ekta Bisht broke the stand removing Mithali, who was caught by Lea Tahuhu.
But as it looked that Wyatt was taking the game away from Trailblazers, leg-spinner Poonam Yadav cut short her stay at the crease.
Australian skipper Meg Lanning (16) was in her element before giving a sitter to Jemimah Rodrigues at long-off as the Supernovas slumped to 71/3 after a strong start.
But then Harmapreet Kaur (21) and Sophie Divine (19) stitched a crucial 36-run-stand that took the game away from the Trailblazers.
Earlier, Bates (32 off 37 balls) and Rodrigues (25 off 23 balls) added 45 runs for the fifth wicket to ensure a decent total for the Trailblazers.
Brief Scores: Trailblazers 129/6 in 20 overs (Suzie Bates 32, Jemimah Rodrigues 25, Megan Schutt 2/18, Ellyse Perry 2/20)
Supernovas 130/7 in 20 overs (Dani Wyatt 24, Harmanpreet Kaur 21, Mithali Raj 22, Suzie Bates 2/16, Poonam Yadav 2/21).

Sourav Ganguly not in favour of toss abolition in Test cricket

Sourav Ganguly not in favour of toss abolition in Test cricket

If toss is done away with, the game's global governing body will alter a 140-year old tradition of the game, all in the name of protecting the five-day format's following

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday joined Bishan Singh Bedi and Dilip Vengsarkar in opposing the proposal to abolish the toss from Test cricket. Opinion has been divided among former cricketers since a newly-formed committee of the International Cricket Council (ICC), one that includes ex-international cricketers and coaches, elite panel umpires and match-referees, has mooted the idea of doing away with the toss in Test cricket.
"It remains to be seen whether it is implemented or not. Personally, I am not in favour of toss abolition," Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata.
If toss is done away with, the game's global governing body will alter a 140-year old tradition of the game, all in the name of protecting the five-day format's following.
The committee headed by former India captain Anil Kumble will debate whether or not the toss should be removed in an attempt to reduce home advantage held by the host team.
This will be discussed in an ICC meeting in Mumbai later in the month.
Asked about home advantage, Ganguly said, "If the home team loses the toss, the advantage does not stay."
Former Australia captains Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh have backed a move to scrap the toss, while West Indies pace great Michael Holding and former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad also felt it would encourage an even contest between bat and ball.

MS Dhoni hints at possible IPL retirement as CSK bid to enter final

MS Dhoni hints at possible IPL retirement as CSK bid to enter final

With age not by his side, the charismatic leader has admitted that his journey with Chennai Super Kings and IPL might be nearing its end.

Chennai Super Kings have arguably been the strongest side in the Indian Premier League history. The Yellow Brigade have qualified for the playoffs in each of the eight seasons they have featured in the cash-league league. In the ongoing 11th edition of the IPL, the Chennai side - playing their ninth IPL season and returning after a two-year suspension - didn't disappoint their fans and duly qualified for the playoffs at the second spot. Chennai will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2018 on Tuesday at the Wankhede Stadium. (IPL 2018 FULL COVERAGE)
Looking at CSK's journey in IPL, Captain Cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been at the forefront of the franchise's success. Dhoni has led the team to two IPL titles (2010, 2011) and has been their core strength ever since the IPL began in 2008. (SRH vs CSK: WHEN AND WHERE TO WATCH LIVE STREAMING OF IPL 2018 QUALIFIER 1)
However, with age not by his side, the charismatic leader has admitted that his journey with CSK might be nearing its end.
Ahead of the CSK's match against SRH, Dhoni told media persons that many of the current lot of players won't be there after two years.
Lauding the owners of CSK, the 36-year-old Dhoni said: "Owners have been brilliant. We have a set of people who are close to the players. They have a history of understanding the game. That makes the job easy for the captain. Also if you don't have a good team, it becomes difficult. We kept adding players and they kept performing.
"The big shift will be after two years, where most of these players won't be there. Maybe they won't be fit for the shortest format. Looking at ten years, it has been very good for us."
Dhoni was confident of his side's chances of making it to the finals.
"Everyone wants to win. They've done well to go into the play-offs. The top two teams they get extra life. What's important is to be at your best on that particular day."
Meanwhile, CSK's star batsman Suresh Raina, in a exclusive interview with IndiaTV, credited Dhoni for the success of his franchise.
"There are a lot of X-factors in the Chennai Super Kings team. By God's grace, we have qualified for the playoffs every single year we have played in the IPL. One factor I would say is MS Dhoni... he is the number one finisher in the world. He is definitely one of the top leaders in the world," Raina told IndiaTV during the show "Cricket Ki Baat".
According to the 31-year-old middle-order batsman, Dhoni is a natural leader and his approach remains the same no matter he captains a team or not.
"There's no difference between MS Dhoni as a player and as a captain. I have always felt that he is an honest captain. He works really hard with all the boys. He is very approachable for all the young players," Raina explained.
